China eSIM Guide for Travelers (2026): Data Without VPN Hassle

Updated June 2026 — 5 min read

An eSIM is the single best travel purchase you'll make for China. It solves two problems at once: internet access and the VPN problem. Most travelers don't realize this until they're standing in an airport trying to figure out why nothing loads.

How eSIMs bypass the firewall

When you use a travel eSIM from Holafly or Nomad, your data routes through a server in Hong Kong or Singapore — not through mainland China's internet infrastructure. Because your traffic exits from outside China, nothing is blocked. Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube — everything works. No VPN app needed.

This isn't a hack or a loophole. It's simply how international roaming works — your data connects through your eSIM provider's network, not China Mobile or China Unicom.

Top eSIMs for China (June 2026)

ProviderPrice (10 days)DataUnrestricted?
Holafly~$25-30Unlimited✅ Yes — routes through HK
Nomad~$22-285-20 GB✅ Yes — routes through HK/SG
Airalo~$15-253-10 GB⚠️ Check — some plans route through mainland

Holafly's unlimited data makes it the best value for heavy users. Nomad has more granular data packages. Airalo is cheapest but verify the IP exits from Hong Kong — not all their China plans do.

Setup: 5 minutes, do it before you fly

  1. Buy your eSIM on Holafly or Nomad's website
  2. You'll get a QR code by email — scan it in your phone's Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
  3. Label it "China Travel" so you know which SIM is which
  4. Activate it before landing — some eSIMs need a few minutes to provision
  5. Once in China, go to Settings → Cellular Data → select your travel eSIM

Your original SIM stays active for calls and SMS. Just make sure data is set to the travel eSIM.

⚠️ Check compatibility: iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel 4+ support eSIM. Older phones and some budget Android models don't. Check your phone model before buying.
